PFF is starting a new Fact of the Fortnight series called “Know Your Contract.” Every two weeks we will introduce an article from the PFF-District Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and discuss the basics.
Did you know? Article 4 of the PFF/District Contract defines the workload and calendar for all faculty, full-time and part-time. The complete article is available at Article 4 of the PFF-District Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Facts:
Workloads are not the same for all faculty. Full-time and part-time instructional faculty members, ECELS teachers, counselors, DRC instructors, and librarians each have specific workloads outlined in Article 4.
Annual salaries are also not paid on the same schedules, which impacts CalSTRS calculations for full-time faculty. Salary Schedules are found in Appendix G of the CBA and on the Human Resources Website.
Academic calendars are negotiated for two-year planning cycles, and there’s a specific date by which the District needs to bring a proposed calendar to PFF. PFF then negotiates the calendar that best serves student needs.
Part-time faculty’s “ancillary activities” (4.1.9.1) are relatively equivalent to full-time faculty’s “institutional responsibilities” (4.1.5). However, full-time faculty are expected to perform 5 hours/week of these responsibilities as part of their workload, while part-time faculty’s “ancillary activities” are not part of their load. If part-time faculty do participate in these activities, they do not count towards the legally established maximum load of 67%.
The formula to calculate hours for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) employment verification and for Affordable Care Act eligibility is at the very end of Article 4.
Bottom Line: Differing faculty demands, full-time and part-time needs, participation in committees and the function of the college, and annual calendar changes are all considered and balanced in Article 4. This section is the foundation of our working conditions and a common reference for faculty and administration.
