Did you know? Your working conditions are outlined in the PFF-District Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), Article 20: Working Conditions, which is being reopened for negotiations this year. The complete article is available at the PFF-District Collective Bargaining Agreement.
This is a continuation of our Fact of the Fortnight series called “Know Your Contract.”
Facts:
Working conditions for all faculty members are enumerated in Article 20 and include many sections ranging from Reimbursement for Personal Property to Faculty Parking to Support Services.
Section 20.8 covers Monitoring of Work Spaces and Communications. Faculty are protected from the District monitoring their electronic transmissions and from eavesdropping unless there is an extreme situation. In this way Faculty can have confidential conversations with their students and colleagues. Moreover, the District may not track faculty members’ presence on campus.
The Part-Time Preference list is detailed in section 20.10, Re-Employment Preference for Part-Time Faculty. The section defines loads, service interruption, and priority number (PN); gives examples; and details how PNs are assigned. This is a relatively new aspect of Article 20 and we are working through the kinks of this policy.
Specific to full-time faculty, Full-Time Faculty Assignment is addressed in section 20.11. Each department has the discretion in determining Faculty assignments that make up their load.
Bottom Line: Working Conditions, along with Compensation and Benefits, is one of the “big three” of the PFF/District Contract. Details can be critical in this article. As we negotiate this and other Articles, we rely on Faculty input. Please reach out to the Union with any questions, comments, or suggestions!
