Fact of the Fortnight, 12/10/20: Faculty Success in the Fall 2020 Semester

For a special video version of this week's Fact, please watch this - it's great!

As this weird semester winds down, we want to take this opportunity to celebrate all the amazing work that faculty have done. And in spite of all this year’s challenges, Palomar faculty have risen above - once again - to serve students and the community in the very best ways.

Just a Few of Many Accomplishments:

All faculty spent countless hours creating positive and productive new learning environments, putting students first.

Faculty have been instrumental in leading the charge in many of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion teams this semester and have been working on campus policies, holding workshops and forums, and attending statewide seminars.

As of this week, 913 faculty members have been certified to teach via Distance Education with the tireless help of Erin Hiro and Kelly Falcone.

PFF hosted eight food distributions on the San Marcos campus, where dozens of faculty and staff members - who often brought their family, friends, and students - volunteered their very early Saturday mornings to help the community. These food distributions have fed thousands of families.

Our Early Childhood Education Lab School faculty have been offering an in-person safe, quality ECE program for toddlers through kindergartners since July 1, providing valuable early childhood care and education for children of first responders, faculty, staff, students, and community members. Drs. Japtok and Jenkins led an impressive employees-only section of AS 101 (African-American History) filled with 34 employees - and are looking forward to continuing by offering an employees-only section of AS 102 next semester.

Faculty taught Public Safety and CTEE classes face-to-face, meeting their students' needs and developing new teaching methods to keep everyone safe.

Performing Arts faculty developed new and innovative methods of using technology to allow students to perform in theater, dance, and music while separated.

Shared governance meetings experienced higher-than-usual attendance and participation, with faculty showing their interest and involvement throughout the District.

Faculty have been critically involved in reworking the campus governance structure to be more inclusive and efficient.

A Senate-Union collaborative faculty team is developing a comprehensive guide to Equity Inclusion for Part-Time Faculty that will be shared with all faculty, administrators and the Board. Specific actions will come from both the Senate and the Union.

Together with other Palomar employees, faculty collected 219 toys for children of San Diego and Imperial county families who have been hit especially hard by this year’s economic situation. PFF matched $5 per toy donated to the cause.

PFF succeeded in negotiating compensation for faculty who participated in getting courses modified through the curriculum process for distance education, and for PT faculty to become POET certified.

Bottom Line: Simply getting through 2020 is a success for any individual or group, but the successes of our faculty’s strength and commitment exceeds even “above and beyond.” Here’s to a healthy and peaceful 2021.
