FOTF 11/12/20 Spring is Coming! Will You Be Able To Teach?

Did You Know? More than 200 faculty members who are scheduled to teach in Spring 2021 are NOT yet Distance Education Certified. Only certified instructors will be able to teach online in Spring 2021 and moving forward.

Facts:

The requirement to be certified to teach online in the Spring semester comes from the CCC Chancellor’s Office and is supported by Palomar College and AP 4105.

If you are not certified you will not be able to teach online courses. To find out if you are certified, check the Palomar College List of Certified Online Instructors.

The requirement to be certified is for both full-time and part-time faculty.

There are still a significant number of full-time faculty without proper certification.

There are three ways of becoming certified:

Completion of the new POET self-paced course through the PD Portal.

Self assessment using the OEI Course Design Rubric. You need to provide evidence of a successful course design and facilitation as demonstrated by alignment with the approved criteria. See instructions for How to Do a Self-Evaluation of a Course, then send the completed rubric to ehiro@palomar.edu.

Evidence of completion of online teaching coursework/training from another college - send proof of coursework or training to ehiro@palomar.edu.

Part-time faculty who are DE certified at another school do not automatically qualify for Palomar DE certification. If you were trained somewhere else, you must send proof of that training to ehiro@palomar.edu.

If you are currently enrolled in POET, you must complete the course by the last day of the Fall 2020 semester (or by December 1, if you are PT faculty looking for PD credit/pay). The Distance Education Committee is not able to manage POET over winter break, and will not be able to guarantee certification for anyone who submits for certification during January.

Bottom Line: Do not wait, and get certified now. You may lose your Spring 2021 classes if you are not certified to teach online by the end of this Fall semester!
