Negotiations Update 20 March 2025

Hello! Happy to report that at today’s table we presented our first counterproposal to Article 20. Notes are below. However, the District has yet to share any of the articles they opened in October. We currently are waiting on:

  • Article 4 (District’s reopener)

  • Appendix L (District’s reopener)

  • Article 16 (automatic reopener)

  • Article 15 (automatic reopener)

  • Article 12 (awaiting the District’s counter)

Article 20 (PFF First Counterproposal)

For reference, we presented our initial proposal for Article 20 on 12/12/24 where, in an attempt to simplify, we folded credit, non-credit, instructional, and non-instructional into single definitions for PN and Base Load. The District presented their first counterproposal on 2/27/25 noting that there were too many issues associated with combining instructional and non-instructional . In our counterproposal, we separated instructional and non-instructional faculty for priority number and base load calculations. In the end, the new process is much cleaner and the language is more clear. The District has agreed to most of the changes. We did continue to advocate for a process for part-time faculty to maintain their PN ranking while on leave or reassigned time. We also advocated for parity in post-retirement teaching for part-time faculty.

Discussion Items

  • Department Bylaws: we discussed the importance of department bylaws and plan to create a standard template that departments can use if they don’t already have bylaws.

  • Calendars have been finalized and signed. One final mistake was corrected on the 25-26 calendar–Fall 2026 will begin on August 24th as reflected on the 26-27 calendar. Both calendars will go to the next board meeting.

  • COLA Retro Pay: After resolving the error in Summer ’24 pay, we flagged a possible error in Summer ’23 and Summer ’22 pay as well. The District is looking into it, and we will keep our eyes on it.

  • Math Lab/Tutoring Pay: the District is still looking into these issues and did not provide any additional information on the potential errors.

  • PT Office Hours Pay: at our last meeting, we had discussed the increase in PT Office Hours and asked the District if they had data on the number of office hours that PT faculty had claimed over the past couple of years. The District did not have that data yet but shared that PT faculty held approximately 10,000 hours of office hours in the Fall semester.

  • Dual Enrollment: due to the growing interest in dual enrollment, we have submitted a demand to bargain to the District to ensure that any changes impacting faculty working conditions are negotiated appropriately. The District understands the urgency and added additional negotiations dates for the Spring semester.

  • Class Caps: one of our next meetings will be dedicated to negotiating new class caps based on the requests for this round.

Our next Negotiations meeting is on Thursday, April 10th.
